About the Item
Statio I – Christ Condemned to Death, Antique Mezzotint – Johann Elias Haid, Augsburg
This dramatic devotional print represents Statio I from the Stations of the Cross: Christ being unjustly condemned to death by Pontius Pilate. The scene is densely composed, showing Christ bound and led forward by soldiers, while Pilate appears elevated at the right, gesturing in judgment. The tension between authority, violence, and quiet submission is conveyed through expressive gesture, carefully modeled anatomy, and deep chiaroscuro.
Christ is depicted with a radiant halo and downcast expression, his calm presence contrasting with the forceful movement of the executioner pulling him forward. The surrounding figures—soldiers and attendants—are rendered with muscular intensity and sharp facial features, heightening the sense of impending injustice. The composition reflects late Baroque religious sensibilities, emphasizing moral drama and emotional engagement.
The print is executed in mezzotint, a technique particularly suited to religious subjects because of its ability to produce rich tonal depth and painterly transitions. The velvety blacks and soft highlights lend the scene a solemn, contemplative atmosphere appropriate for meditation on the Passion.
This work was engraved by Johann Elias Haid, one of the most accomplished German practitioners of Schabkunst in the 18th century. Active in Augsburg, Haid produced numerous religious and historical subjects, often after painted models, intended for private devotion or ecclesiastical use. His Stations of the Cross prints are valued for both their technical refinement and devotional intensity.
The plate includes Latin and German text beneath the image, explaining the scene and reinforcing its didactic function. As an individual sheet, it stands well on its own, but it would originally have formed part of a complete Passion series.
Condition report: Fair. The sheet shows noticeable age toning, scattered spotting, and handling creases, with some edge wear and irregularities. The image remains legible with good overall tonal contrast, though signs of age and use are clearly present. Paper is mounted to secondaty paper.
Framing suggestions: Best framed with a wide off-white or light gray mat to balance the dark image. A simple dark wood or black frame will enhance the solemn character of the scene.
