Title: Tinted Lithograph of Valley in the Slope of the Great Basin, 1856 Description: This beautifully tinted lithograph, "Valley in the Slope of the Great Basin, Leading from the Tejon Pass," offers a serene glimpse into the rugged landscape and unique vegetation of mid-19th century California. Created from a sketch by expedition artist Charles Koppel and lithographed by A. Hoen Co., this piece was part of the monumental Pacific Railroad Surveys conducted to determine the most feasible routes for a transcontinental railroad. As Geology Plate XI in the survey's documentation, this print was published in 1856 under the "Reports of Explorations and Surveys." The lithograph employs subtle tones and detailed shading, enhancing the drama and vastness of the Great Basin landscape. The striking depiction of Joshua trees and the distant view of a mounted group traversing the valley exemplify the fine balance between scientific accuracy and artistic beauty.
