About the Item

Défense de Tuyen-Quan Tonkin 1885 French Colonial Battle Épinal Print This vivid French color lithograph depicts the heroic defense of Tuyen-Quan during the Tonkin Campaign, fought between 14 February and 3 March 1885, one of the most celebrated episodes of French colonial military history in Indochina. Issued by Pellerin Cie of Épinal, the print commemorates the desperate resistance of a small French garrison against overwhelming Chinese forces during the Sino-French War. The composition centers on the fortified walls of Tuyen-Quan, where French soldiers of the Légion étrangère and colonial infantry are shown repelling repeated assaults with bayonets, rifles, and close-quarters combat. The attackers, identified in the accompanying text as Chinese troops, surge toward the breaches amid dense clouds of smoke, fallen combatants, and scattered weapons. The French tricolour flies above the fortifications, reinforcing the narrative of endurance and resolve under siege. Architectural details evoke the setting in northern Vietnam, with stylized East Asian towers and walls forming a dramatic backdrop to the action. Uniforms, equipment, and gestures are rendered with clarity and energy, characteristic of the finest Imagerie d’Épinal battle scenes. The hand coloring remains strong, heightening the contrast between the defenders and attackers and emphasizing the violence and urgency of the struggle. Below the image, the extensive original French text provides a detailed account of the siege, describing the composition of the garrison, the scale of the attacking forces, the duration of the fighting, and the heavy casualties suffered on both sides. This narrative element is integral to the print, reflecting contemporary French perspectives on the campaign and the way such overseas conflicts were presented to the public as acts of bravery and national sacrifice. Épinal prints documenting colonial warfare in Asia occupy a distinctive place within 19th-century popular imagery. This sheet stands out for its dramatic subject, clear siege narrative, and strong visual impact. It is particularly appealing to collectors of military history, French colonial campaigns, the Tonkin War, and historical representations of Vietnam, as well as to interior designers seeking a bold and historically charged wall piece. Condition Good overall condition. Light age toning to the paper and minor handling wear consistent with age. Colors remain vivid and well preserved. Margins intact, with the printed text fully legible. No major tears, losses, or restorations observed. Framing tips This print benefits from a substantial presentation. A dark wood or ebonized frame with a wide off-white or light grey mat will balance the busy composition and enhance legibility. Museum or UV-filtering glass is recommended to protect the original coloring. A generous mat adds depth and suits both classic and contemporary interiors. Technique: Color lithograph (Imagerie d’Épinal) Maker: Pellerin Cie, Épinal, France, 1885
