About the Item

Trevi Fountain Rome – Antique Hand-Coloured Italian View by Gigli (c.1850) This finely hand-coloured 19th-century view shows the celebrated Fontana di Trevi in Rome, rendered with clear architectural detail and warm tonal washes. The composition captures the full Baroque grandeur of the fountain and the Palazzo Poli façade, including the sculptural program with Oceanus, allegorical statues, and richly ornamented niches and columns. Typical of mid-century Italian topographical art, the scene also includes small human figures, street life, and the surrounding Roman architecture, lending an authentic Grand Tour atmosphere. The print is signed “T. Gigli” at lower left, indicating the Italian artist known for producing high-quality views of Rome during the Grand Tour period. Gigli’s linework is crisp, with controlled shading and carefully applied colouring that enhances the stonework, water effects and architectural forms. The sheet retains wide margins and strong, unfaded colour. Early hand-coloured engraved views of Trevi Fountain are increasingly desirable among collectors of Italian topography, architecture and Grand Tour souvenirs, and this is a particularly striking example. Condition report: Good condition for age. Strong colouring and clean paper surface. A wormhole in the lower left margin touches the edge of the image. Light age toning in the margins. Plate mark visible. No tears or folds affecting the printed area. Framing tips: Works well in a walnut or dark olive wooden frame paired with a cream or soft ivory mat to enhance the warm tones of the façade. For a modern interior, a thin black metal frame with a white archival mat provides a clean contemporary contrast while keeping the historical character intact. Technique: Hand-coloured engraving Maker: T. Gigli, Italy, c.1850
