About the Item
Tribes and Peoples of Russia – Miniature Accordion Ethnographic Book, Moscow 1890
A rare and finely produced miniature ethnographic book titled 'Племена и народы России' (Tribes and Peoples of Russia), published in Moscow by I. I. Pashkov on December 6, 1890. This unusual edition is presented in an accordion-folding format, measuring just 0.3 x 4.3 x 5.3 inches (0.8 x 11 x 13.5 cm), making it both a curiosity of 19th-century bookmaking and a valuable document of the cultural diversity of the Russian Empire.
The volume unfolds to reveal a sequence of full-page chromolithograph illustrations, each depicting a different ethnic group in their traditional costume. The vivid coloring and fine lithographic detail convey the pride and fascination of late Imperial Russia with its multiethnic population. Groups depicted include Ryazan peasants, Kaluga people, Finns, Zyryans (Komi), Kalmyks, Bashkirs, Crimean Tatars, Chechens, Georgians, Imeretians, Line Cossacks, Ural Cossacks, Roma (Gypsies), and a Nendaleț from the Primorsky region, among others. The original chromolithographic cover is also preserved.
Books of this kind were intended for both popular education and as decorative curiosities, combining ethnographic documentation with artistic charm. The compact accordion style allowed multiple images to be displayed at once, and its miniature format made it a collectible souvenir item.
Collector’s note: This miniature accordion book is a rarity in the field of ethnographic illustration. Its survival with richly colored plates intact makes it a highly desirable piece for collectors of Russian history, costume illustration, or miniature books. It represents both the artistry of late 19th-century lithography and the fascination of the period with recording the empire’s vast cultural mosaic. Few examples of this fragile format have endured, making this a particularly appealing find.
Condition report: Light wear and rubbing to covers; minor foxing and age-toning to some plates. Colors remain fresh and vibrant, with strong impressions. Accordion folds intact. A well-preserved and rare survival.
Framing tips: Individual plates from this folding book are suitable for framing in small formats. A dark wood or walnut frame with ivory matting will highlight the warmth of the hand-applied coloring. For a striking display, several plates could be framed together in a grid formation, creating a miniature ethnographic gallery.
