About the Item
The Unjust Steward Engraving – Luke XVI Parable Scene 1735
This antique engraving illustrates the Parable of the Unjust Steward from the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 16, verse 5, published in 1735. The scene shows the dishonest steward seated at a writing desk, taking accounts from his master’s debtors. In the engraving, the steward, bearded and seated, writes on a document while accepting a scroll handed to him by a standing man dressed in a long robe and cap. Another man stands nearby, holding a paper, watching the transaction. In the background, two figures walk through the grand arched corridor, indicating the busy household environment.
On the wall behind the steward hangs a board listing numbers, symbolising the debts being altered or reduced to gain favour with the debtors before his dismissal. The interior is depicted with classical architectural details, including arched doorways, tiled floors, and leaded glass windows, adding depth and historical realism to the scene.
This engraving was produced using the copper engraving technique, known for its fine linear detail and clarity. The print originates from an 18th-century Bible published in 1735, part of a series illustrating New Testament parables and teachings. The Unjust Steward is an important parable where Jesus tells of a steward who, upon being dismissed for mismanagement, reduces his master’s debtors’ accounts to gain friends who might support him afterwards. Its moral complexity has intrigued theologians for centuries, making this print significant for collectors of biblical art and scholars of Christian teachings.
The engraving demonstrates careful composition, with expressive gestures and realistic drapery work, characteristic of early 18th-century religious prints. It remains a meaningful artwork exploring themes of prudence, justice, and moral decisions.
Condition summary: Good condition for its age. Light toning and a few small foxing spots, mainly in the margins. No tears or repairs noted. The copper engraving impression is strong with clear lines and good contrast. Paper is firm and stable with minimal edge wear.
Framing tips: This detailed engraving will display well in a dark wood, mahogany, or black frame to enhance its tonal richness. Use an off-white, ivory, or antique cream mount to complement the paper’s warm tone. A simple classic frame style suits the architectural setting depicted, and UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the fine lines and prevent fading over time.
