About the Item

Upper Austria Folk Costume Couple, Antique Lithograph – Trentsensky c.1825 This hand-colored lithograph depicts a traditionally dressed couple from Upper Austria (Oberösterreich), presented in an intimate, informal pose that emphasizes regional identity and everyday life. The figures are shown walking together, engaged in quiet conversation, allowing the costume itself to remain the central subject of the composition. The woman wears a fitted bodice over a light blouse with gathered sleeves, a full skirt with decorative banding at the hem, and a tied headscarf typical of the region. The man is dressed in knee-length trousers, pale stockings, and a long coat with a fur-trimmed collar, complemented by a wide-brimmed hat and ornamented waistcoat. The careful rendering of textiles, color contrasts, and accessories reflects early 19th-century interest in documenting folk traditions with both accuracy and visual appeal. This print was produced in Vienna by Joseph Trentsensky, one of the most important lithographers and publishers of the Biedermeier period. Trentsensky is especially known for his high-quality color lithography and for publishing extensive series of regional and international folk costumes. This plate originates from his well-known costume series commonly referred to as “Völkertrachten,” published around 1825, which sought to record traditional dress from across Europe and beyond. Individual costume prints from this series were collected both for their ethnographic value and for their decorative qualities. Today, they remain highly sought after by collectors of folk art, costume history, and Central European cultural material, and they also work beautifully as standalone decorative pieces in interiors. Condition report: Original hand coloring. Light age toning and minor surface spotting to the margins consistent with age. The image itself remains clean, fresh, and well preserved. Litho loosely mounted on a backing paper. Framing suggestions: Best presented in a dark wood or black frame with a wide ivory or warm off-white mat, allowing generous space around the image and reinforcing a museum-style presentation. Technique: Hand-colored lithograph Maker: Joseph Trentsensky, Vienna, ca. 1825
