Antique Engraving of Veracruz Mexico – Port City with Volcano View, 1867
This detailed 19th-century engraving shows a panoramic view of Veracruz, the historic port city of Mexico, with ships at anchor and the dramatic outline of a smoking volcano rising in the distance. Published in Louis Énault’s L’Amérique centrale et méridionale (Paris, 1867), the engraving was executed by Outhwaite after a drawing by Lebreton.
The composition captures Veracruz as seen from the Gulf of Mexico: the bustling harbor with tall-masted ships and smaller boats battling waves, the fortifications and lighthouse along the shoreline, and the town’s towers rising against the mountainous backdrop. The plume of smoke drifting from the volcano gives the scene a sense of natural drama, a reminder of the powerful forces that shaped the Mexican landscape.
As the principal port of New Spain and later independent Mexico, Veracruz held enormous economic and strategic significance throughout the colonial and post-colonial periods. This engraving documents the city’s importance in the mid-19th century while appealing to the fascination of European readers for exotic landscapes, maritime activity, and dramatic natural settings.
