About the Item

Victorian Vanity Fair Caricatures, Society Power, Set of Six, 1883 This elegant set of six original Vanity Fair chromolithographs, published between January and February 1883, presents a richly varied portrait of late Victorian power, culture, and social authority. Issued at the height of Vanity Fair’s influence and printed by Vincent Brooks, Day Son, these full-length caricatures exemplify the magazine’s distinctive blend of refined portraiture and gentle satire, capturing leading figures whose prominence extended across aristocracy, finance, art patronage, imperial politics, and civic life. The prints are offered unframed, enabling custom framing to personal or interior preferences. The set includes Her Grace the Duchess Dowager of Cleveland, a respected figure of Victorian high society, depicted with poise and quiet authority; Captain Henry Montague Hozier, shown under the caption “Lloyds,” reflecting his role as Secretary of Lloyd’s and his lasting impact on maritime insurance and international trade; Sir Coutts Lindsay, founder of the Grosvenor Gallery, whose patronage helped define the Aesthetic movement in London; Viscount Baring, later Earl of Northbrook, a powerful statesman and financier who served as Viceroy of India; Tewfik Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, portrayed during a decisive period of British involvement in Egyptian affairs; and Sir John Bennett, Lord Mayor of London, shown on horseback under the caption “Clocks,” symbolising commercial success and civic authority in the City of London. Visually, the six prints form a cohesive and well-balanced ensemble, unified by format, palette, and date. The pale grounds, controlled hand-colouring, and dignified poses create a calm, architectural rhythm that translates exceptionally well to refined interiors. Displayed together, the set reflects a distinctly Victorian worldview in which aristocratic lineage, financial power, imperial reach, and cultural ambition were closely intertwined. Condition: Overall very good original condition for late 19th-century chromolithographs. Light, even age toning to the paper throughout, with occasional small scattered spots or faint marks, consistent with age and handling. The printed images remain strong and clear, with fresh hand-colouring and no significant fading. Margins are ample on all sheets, suitable for framing, and no major tears, losses, or restorations are observed. Framing tips: For a cohesive and elevated presentation, frame all six prints uniformly in dark walnut, ebonised wood, or antique-style gilt frames with generous ivory or warm off-white mounts. Museum or UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the original colouring. The set works particularly well arranged as a linear horizontal sequence or in a balanced two-by-three configuration, enhancing both symmetry and visual rhythm. 19th C., Vanity Fair Framed Chromolithograph of Gentlemen Ex. Christie s
By Sir Leslie Ward
Located in Morristown, NJ
[English Gentlemen], from Vanity Fair chromolithograph, on wove papers. Printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son., with various dates from 1875 to 1897. Professionally framed with black and gilt frames and beige silk mats, with margins, apparently in excellent condition, not examined out of the frames. Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine published in London, founded & edited by Thomas Gibson Bowles. His aim was to expose to contemporary vanities of Victorian society. From 1868 to 1914, full page colour lithographs appeared in most weekly issues, frequently lampooning or lauding their subjects which included artists, athletes, royalty, politicians, scientists, authors, actors, sportsmen, lawyers, diplomats, soldiers, clergy, scholars and other celebrities of the day - mostly British, but also many other internationally significant personalities. Over 2,300 of these colour cartoons were printed, and they are considered the chief cultural legacy of the magazine, forming a pictorial record of many of the most significant public figures of the period. They are renowned throughout the world and highly collectible and recognisable. Famous artists contributed to Vanity Fair, typically under pen names. The best remembered today is Leslie Ward (1851-1922), who signed his works as "Spy", and whose caricatures account for well over half of those featured in Vanity Fair. So famous have these fabulous prints become, Vanity Fair caricatures today often are referred to simply as "Spy Cartoons...
