About the Item

View of the Great Mosque Atter Ennabi, Egypt – Norden Copper Engraving 1755 Description: This elegant copper engraving depicts the Great Mosque Atter Ennabi, shown from across the Nile with sailing boats animating the foreground. The view originates from Frederik Ludvig Norden’s Voyage d’Egypte et de Nubie, first published in Copenhagen in 1755, one of the most influential pre-Napoleonic visual records of Egypt. Norden’s work is distinguished by its balanced combination of architectural accuracy, landscape composition, and lived experience along the Nile. Unlike later archaeological surveys, this view integrates religious architecture into its natural and social environment, with river traffic, shoreline structures, and vegetation rendered in a calm, panoramic composition. The engraving was executed after Norden’s original drawings by Marcus Tuscher, whose refined line work lends clarity and depth to the scene. The plate carries a French caption and reflects the Enlightenment-era fascination with Islamic architecture as both monument and living institution. This subject appeals strongly to collectors of Grand Tour imagery, early Orientalist views, and architectural interiors, and performs well framed as a standalone statement piece. Condition report: Light overall toning and scattered spotting consistent with mid-18th-century paper. Strong impression, margins ample. Framing tips: Works well with a wide off-white mat and classic gilt or dark walnut frame; also striking in a thin black frame for contemporary interiors. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Frederik Ludvig Norden, after Marcus Tuscher, Denmark, 1755
