This refined 18th-century engraving presents a panoramic view and perspective of Nezlet Abonour, a settlement along the Nile rendered with clarity and restraint. The composition emphasizes the broad sweep of the river in the foreground, with palm groves, low buildings, and a raised rocky formation crowned by small structures forming the focal point of the landscape. A sailing boat on the Nile provides scale and reinforces the sense of quiet movement through the scene.
The plate originates from Voyage d’Égypte et de Nubie by Frederik Ludvig Norden, first published in Copenhagen in 1755. Norden, a Danish naval officer and accomplished draughtsman, was among the earliest European travelers to record Egypt through direct observation rather than imaginative reconstruction. His work is valued for its accuracy, balance, and documentary approach, capturing Egypt as a lived environment shaped by river, settlement, and terrain.
