About the Item

Vue de la Colonnade du Louvre – Architectural Engraving by Louis-Pierre Baltard An elegant architectural engraving by Louis-Pierre Baltard (1764–1846), titled Vue de la Colonnade du Louvre, prise au Premier Étage (View of the Colonnade of the Louvre, taken from the first floor). Created around 1795–1800, this masterful composition captures the grandeur of the Louvre’s eastern façade — the celebrated Colonnade designed by Claude Perrault in the 17th century — through the refined eye of one of France’s foremost architectural engravers. The perspective draws the viewer into the monumental rhythm of Corinthian columns, stretching toward the vanishing point beneath an elaborately coffered ceiling. Through the portico, the distant dome of the Panthéon rises under a softly clouded sky, giving the architectural space an almost theatrical sense of depth and atmosphere. Two elegantly dressed figures add scale and a touch of neoclassical life, reinforcing the human relationship to monumental architecture. Baltard’s use of light, linear precision, and shadow gradation exemplifies his technical mastery. His architectural engravings not only documented France’s most important buildings but also served as visual textbooks for students of architecture during the late Enlightenment and Napoleonic eras. The Louvre’s colonnade, a symbol of classical harmony and French royal grandeur, is here rendered with remarkable spatial discipline and artistic subtlety. Condition report: Good impression with crisp lines and deep tonal contrast. Minor foxing and marginal toning typical for the period, small tears at the upper edge not affecting the image. Full platemark visible and wide original margins preserved. Framing tips: A dark walnut or ebony frame with a thin ivory mat will accentuate the engraving’s architectural depth and classical balance. Suitable for display in a study, library, or neoclassical interior. Technique: Copperplate engraving Maker: Louis-Pierre Baltard, Paris, circa 1795–1800
