About the Item

A beautiful hand colored engraving of the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy. While the subject is Italian, the printmaker was French. It bears the inscription, "Vue du Pont Realto et de la Prison de Venise," with the printmaker listed below, "A Paris chez Basset rue S. Jacques". At the top of the print it reads, "Pont Realto" backwards. This reverse title indicates that the print is actually an optical print, meant to be viewed through a Zograscope. Zograscopes were used in the 18th and 19th centuries for viewing optical prints. The lens would reverse the image and make it appear three dimensional, much like a stereoscope did for photographs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Hand-colored image size is 8.5"H x 15.25"W Framed dimension is 15.5H x 21"W x .75"D Condition commensurate with age and use. The engraving was matted and framed by Haley Steele of Boston, MA. Beautiful vintage matting with multiple French lines. The simple black frame is strong and sturdy but has a significant number of scratches and dents, which have been touched up with black stain.
