Engraving on paper titled “Walsingham Abbey Gate” by John Sell Cotman, from a series of English Norman churches. The work has a dedication in the lower margin which reads: "To Edmond Wodehouse Esq, this plate is respectfully dedicated by his obt servant J.S. Cotman." The work is archival mat and mounted in an ebonized wood molding. Etched and published by J.S. Cotman, Yarmouth, (England) 1812. England, 1812. An antique line engraving by J. Basire after J. Schnebbelie, published in 1790. The Magdalen Chapel is located in the Cowgate in Edinburgh. The Chapel was built between 1541 and 1544 by Janet Rynd, widow of Michael MacQueen (died 1537), who had left money for this purpose. The building was to be the new chapel for the Incorporation of Hammermen and was to include accommodation for a chaplain and also an almshouse for seven Bedesmen (poor men) ‘who should continually pour forth prayers to Almighty God’.
