Léopold Flameng, Belgian painter and engraver, was born to French parents. He was a student of Luigi Calamatta and Jean Gigoux. His skill as a burinist brought him to the attention of Charles Blanc, and his collaboration on publications such as L'Artiste and the Gazette des beaux-arts, with Léon Gaucherel, was one of the first engravers for this magazine, which would establish his reputation. Georges Duplessis, art historian, quotes him in a work published in 1869: "Léopold Flameng rose in his time to the rank of master." He received a medal at the 1878 World's Fair.
Known for his etchings after Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Ingres, and Eugène Delacroix, he illustrated several books on Paris as well as numerous literary works by classical and contemporary authors, including Boccaccio, Paul Scarron, Victor Hugo, and François Coppée.
François Flameng was the son of the famous painter and engraver Léopold Flameng. He attended the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris for his secondary education. Learning to paint from his father, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel, then in those of Pierre Edmond Alexandre Hédouin and Jean-Paul Laurens.
As early as 1870, he produced several reproductions of works by painters Alfred Sisley, Édouard Manet, and Claude Monet for the catalog of the Durand-Ruel Gallery. In 1875, he made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français with his painting "Le Lectern."
He received numerous commissions for portraits, historical scenes, and decorative paintings. His academic style, combining precise drawing and mastery of color, appealed to the bourgeoisie and aristocracy of the time.
During his career, François Flameng was elevated to the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor and elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
He left behind a considerable artistic legacy. His works, preserved in the world's greatest museums, bear witness to his exceptional talent and his significant contribution to French art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Société Française des Amis des Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous distinguished subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules, and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E. Drake, André Fallières, Louis Lévy, Paul Louchet, Maurice Moisset, Louis Montagné...

“The Restaurant of the House of Representatives” Engraving by Harper
s Weekly
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This original wood engraving is titled “The Restaurant of the House of Representatives, Washington, DC.” It was published as a double-page image, in the August 12, 1893 issue of the famous 19th century newspaper Harper’s Weekly. The print was illustrated by Charles Stanley Reinhardt.
The House Restaurant, a unique part of life in the Capitol, has been in the same location since the 1857 Capitol Expansion. Congressional members’ busy work schedule made the availability of food on site a necessity. But the restaurant also served as an informal meeting spot for members to continue conversations and deal making.
This 1893 print illustrates the convivial atmosphere. Details including elegantly dressed tables...

19C Aquatint Engraving of the Quay at Waterford
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a lovely 19C Aquatint Engraving of the Quay at Waterford in Waterford city in Ireland.
This engraving has been hand embellished with aquatint color(s) and is from Ireland circa 1820-40.
It features a scene of the Quay or Port of Waterford from circa 1820. We are basing this upon the attire of the figures in the engraving and the tall ships.
It features Reginald’s Tower (still located at the Waterford Quay to this day). Georgian Quay buildings, a number of moored tall ships and row boats, barrels, horses and carts, women and British soldiers.
The engraving was professionally reframed and matted in Dallas in the 1980’s and the rear of the frame says that it was “Museum Mounted and Matted”. The frame has a lovely Grecian pattern around the front.
If you are Irish...

Indian Brahmin Penitents and Pilgrim – Rare 18th Century Ritual Engraving, 1734
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: Indian Brahmin Penitents and Pilgrim – Rare 18th Century Ritual Engraving
Description:
This compelling copperplate engraving from the 18th century offers a rare visual study of Indian religious asceticism and devotion as interpreted through a European lens. It likely originates from the later volumes of *The Ceremonies and Religious Customs of Various Nations of the Known World*, the monumental multi-volume series published in Amsterdam and Paris during the early to mid-1700s, with illustrations attributed to Bernard Picart and his collaborators.
The sheet is divided into four separately framed scenes, each depicting a unique figure engaged in acts of penance or pilgrimage. The upper left panel shows a seated female "Pénitente Bramine" (Brahmin penitent) under a flowering tree, joined by other women in a meditative or devotional posture. The details, such as the tiger skin mat and ceremonial tools, signal both religious symbolism and ritual practice.
The upper right image presents a solitary ascetic woman seated in rigid meditation on what appears to be a stretched animal hide floating in water, holding a prayer bead mala. The caption explains she must never change position, emphasizing the extremity of her discipline.
The lower left quadrant is the most dramatic: a male penitent with wild hair stands before a temple with both arms raised straight in the air, said to remain that way until death. Another figure lies prostrate in the grass, illustrating the prescribed sleeping posture for certain penitents—lying flat without ever bending their legs. These powerful visual representations underscore the physical trials undertaken by devout individuals in pursuit of spiritual transcendence.
In the lower right, a "Pélerine Bramine" (Brahmin female pilgrim) stands quietly, dressed simply, with a bowl in hand, perhaps engaged in ritual begging or...
