About the Item
Arctic Fox “Le Renard Blanc du Canada” — A.J. Hulk after Buffon
A beautifully hand-colored antique natural history print depicting the Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), here titled in French “Le Renard Blanc du Canada” (“The White Fox of Canada”). Shown in a nocturnal landscape beneath a crescent moon, the animal’s winter coat is rendered with fine, hair-by-hair linework, while the background combines dramatic cloud forms, rocky terrain, and distant dwellings—an appealing mix of scientific illustration and atmospheric storytelling that works especially well for cabin, library, ski-chalet, or modern nature-inspired interiors.
The plate is engraved by Abraham Jacobsz Hulk (Dutch, 1751–c.1817), as indicated by the signature “Hulk Sculp.” Such prints relate to the great natural history tradition associated with Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788), whose influential Histoire naturelle helped shape European understanding of the animal world and remained a cornerstone reference for generations of naturalists. The result is a collectible, décor-ready animal subject: crisp copperplate lines, subtle hand color, and a strong central silhouette that frames beautifully, either as a standalone statement or as part of a curated wildlife wall with wolves, bears, owls, or other Arctic / North American themes.
Sheet size: 21 x 26 cm (8.3 x 10.2 inches). Image size: 14.5 x 19.5 cm (5.7 x 7.7 inches). Hand-laid (verge) paper.
Condition report: Very good for age. Light overall toning and minor handling signs. Please study the scan carefully for any small edge wear or faint age marks.
Framing tips: A warm black, dark walnut, or natural oak frame pairs well with the night sky tones. Use an off-white or soft grey mat to keep it crisp; a slightly wider bottom mat gives a classic natural-history presentation.
