About the Item
The Wine Merchants and Weavers Guilds – A Celebration of Bernese Trade and Craft
Description: This remarkable hand-colored lithograph is part of the Fest Album Celebrating Bern’s Entry into the Swiss Confederation on March 6, 1353, Commemorated in 1853 on the Victory Days of Laupen and Murten, published in Bern and Zurich in 1855. Created by the artist Heinrich Jenny and lithographed by Kümmerly and Wittmer, this illustration presents two historically significant Bernese guilds, the Wine Merchants and the Weavers, marching in a grand procession that honors their trade, craftsmanship, and place in Bernese society.
On the left, the Wine Merchants Guild, or Mittellöwen, marches in rich red and white Renaissance-style uniforms. The banner bearer holds a striking flag with a red lion on a radiating striped background, a symbol of the guild’s strength and prosperity. The members of this guild were responsible for the trade, import, and regulation of wine in Bern, an essential commodity in medieval and early modern society. Behind the banner bearer, the guild members stand in disciplined formation, armed with halberds, showcasing their role in both commerce and civic defense.
On the right, the Weavers Guild, or Webern, is depicted in elaborate blue and gold attire, carrying a banner featuring a crowned blue shield flanked by a black and gold rampant lion. The intricate patterns of their uniforms reflect the artistry and prestige associated with their craft. The weaving industry played a crucial role in Bern’s economy, producing textiles for local and international markets. The precision and uniformity of the weavers’ formation emphasize their discipline and pride in their trade.
This lithograph captures the grandeur and historical significance of Bern’s five hundredth-anniversary celebration, where each guild was represented in a highly detailed and ceremonial fashion. The composition is meticulously arranged, with the contrasting warm reds and cool blues emphasizing the visual impact of the two groups. The exquisite detailing in the clothing, facial expressions, and banners speaks to the high level of craftsmanship in Jenny’s work, making this lithograph both an artistic and historical treasure.
Summary of Condition:
The print is in good condition, with only minor signs of aging, such as slight foxing along the margins and mild discoloration on the edges. The colors remain rich and vibrant, particularly in the reds, blues, and golds of the guild uniforms. The fine lines, shading, and intricate details are well-preserved, maintaining the integrity of the artwork.
Framing Tips:
To enhance the striking contrast of the red and blue uniforms, a dark mahogany or deep gold frame would add a refined historical touch. A neutral archival mat in off-white or warm beige would help bring out the vibrant colors without overwhelming the composition. UV-resistant glass is highly recommended to protect the pigments and maintain the richness of the colors over time. A shadow box frame with a floating mount would highlight the depth and movement within the composition, making it an impressive addition to any historical or art collection.
