About the Item
Worcester Porcelain Covered Vase Design with Phoenix, Green Ground, 1910
This refined chromolithograph illustrates an elaborate covered vase design produced for Worcester porcelain, published in 1910 in R. L. Hobson’s seminal reference on the history of the manufactory. The vase is shown in full elevation, allowing the form, colour balance, and decorative programme to be appreciated as a complete design rather than as a fragment.
NOTE: The print is offered unframed, giving flexibility to select a frame that best suits the intended interior. The attached image of the print in a frame is an impression only.
The vase is decorated on a rich green ground with extensive gilded ornament and large shaped reserves. At the centre appears a dramatic phoenix scene, the mythical bird rendered in flowing movement among flowering branches and stylised foliage. The phoenix, a symbol of renewal and immortality, was a favoured motif in high-quality Worcester wares inspired by East Asian models. Surrounding panels feature additional birds, floral sprays, and patterned grounds, carefully organised to articulate the faceted body of the vase.
Gold highlighting plays a crucial role in the design. Gilded borders define the reserves, rims, and architectural divisions of the vessel, lending depth and richness to the overall composition. The chromolithographic process captures the warmth and subtlety of the gilding with remarkable clarity, conveying the luxurious character of the original porcelain surface.
The domed cover, crowned with a finial, is decorated en suite, reinforcing the vertical rhythm of the piece and emphasizing its ceremonial presence. The overall effect is one of controlled opulence, balancing strong colour with intricate pattern and figurative ornament.
This print was drawn by J. H. Thorpe and printed by the distinguished firm W. Griggs
Sons for publication by Bernard Quaritch in London. It originates from Worcester Porcelain: A Description of the Ware from the Wall Period to the Present Day by R. L. Hobson, a standard scholarly reference still consulted today.
As a single work, this plate functions exceptionally well as a statement piece, suitable for display in a dining room, library, or refined interior where historic decorative arts are appreciated.
Condition:
Very good condition. Light, even age toning consistent with early 20th-century chromolithographs. Colours remain strong and fresh. Minor handling marks at the margins.
Framing tips:
Frame in a dark walnut or ebonised frame with a generous ivory or warm off-white mat to enhance the green ground and gilded details. A slightly wider lower mat margin will emphasize the height and elegance of the vase.
