About the Item

Worcester Porcelain Designs, Dish, Covered Vase Tea Wares, Gold Decor, 1910 NOTE: The prints are offered unframed, giving flexibility to select a frame that best suits the intended interior. The attached image of the prints in a frame is an impression only. This curated group of three original chromolithographs illustrates a varied and decorative selection of Worcester porcelain designs, published in 1910 in R. L. Hobson’s definitive study of the manufactory. Shown together, the plates demonstrate the breadth of Worcester production, ranging from tableware and service pieces to tall ornamental vases, unified by refined colour grounds and carefully applied gilding. The left plate presents a composition of tea wares on a yellow-green ground, including a cup and saucer and a lidded vessel. The pieces are decorated with delicate birds, floral sprays, and soft pastel ornament, framed by subtle gilt borders. This plate offers insight into Worcester’s approach to smaller domestic objects, where lightness of colour and playful decorative detail were combined with elegant form. At centre is a large dish with a deep claret ground, richly ornamented with gold and shaped reserves. The scalloped rim encloses a central still-life of fruit and flowers, painted with softness and precision. Gilded scrollwork and border decoration emphasize the contours of the dish and give the design a luxurious, service-ready appearance. The horizontal format of this plate provides visual breadth and acts as a strong focal point within the group. The right plate depicts a tall covered vase in semi-oriental taste, decorated on a pale ground with vertical panels of flowers and foliage. The domed cover and faceted body are articulated through patterned bands and gilded accents, while the overall composition reflects Worcester’s interpretation of East Asian decorative traditions adapted for the English market. The vase reads as a formal, architectural object, contrasting effectively with the more intimate tea wares and the expansive dish. Gold highlighting is a unifying element across all three plates. The chromolithographic process captures the warmth and subtle sheen of gilding along rims, borders, and ornamental divisions, reinforcing the impression of quality and craftsmanship associated with Worcester porcelain at the turn of the 20th century. All three prints originate from *Worcester Porcelain: A Description of the Ware from the Wall Period to the Present Day* by R. L. Hobson, published in London by Bernard Quaritch in 1910. The plates were drawn by J. H. Thorpe and printed by W. Griggs Sons, celebrated for their high-quality colour printing for museum and scholarly publications. Condition: Very good condition overall. Light, even age toning consistent with early 20th-century chromolithographs. Colours remain fresh and well preserved. Minor handling marks at the margins. Plate marks visible. Framing tips: Frame uniformly in dark walnut or ebonised frames with generous ivory mats. The central dish benefits from slightly wider side margins to balance the vertical plates on either side, creating a harmonious triptych arrangement. Technique: Chromolithography Maker: J. H. Thorpe, London, 1910
