About the Item
Worcester Porcelain Dessert Dish Design, Deep Blue Ground with Pierced Rim, 1910
This refined chromolithograph illustrates a Worcester porcelain dessert dish of notable elegance, published in 1910 in R. L. Hobson’s authoritative study of the manufactory. The plate presents the dish both in plan and profile, allowing the viewer to appreciate not only the decorative surface but also the sculptural form and construction of the piece.
NOTE: The print is offered unframed, giving flexibility to select a frame that best suits the intended interior. The attached image of the print in a frame is an impression only.
The dish is distinguished by its deep blue ground, which provides a rich and dramatic field for the central floral reserve. At the centre, a delicately painted bouquet of flowers is framed by fine gilded scrollwork, the gold lending warmth and refinement against the cool blue tone. Surrounding this is an elaborately pierced border, rendered in a pale contrasting tone and shaped into rhythmic openwork patterns. Shell-like motifs and undulating contours animate the rim, giving the dish a strong Rococo-inspired character.
The lower profile view emphasizes the shallow bowl and extended, sculptural rim, underscoring Worcester’s technical skill in combining complex pierced work with stable, functional form. Gold highlights appear sparingly but effectively, accenting the central reserve and enhancing the overall sense of luxury without overwhelming the design.
The chromolithographic technique captures the depth of the blue ground and the subtle sheen of the gilding with great clarity, conveying the visual richness of the original porcelain. This plate exemplifies Worcester’s high-level dessert wares, intended to impress both on the table and as objects of display.
The print originates from *Worcester Porcelain: A Description of the Ware from the Wall Period to the Present Day* by R. L. Hobson, published in London by Bernard Quaritch in 1910. The illustration was drawn by J. H. Thorpe and printed by W. Griggs
Sons, renowned for their museum-quality colour printing.
As a single work, this plate functions exceptionally well as a decorative wall piece, appealing to collectors of English ceramics and interior designers drawn to blue-and-gold palettes and refined historic ornament.
Condition:
Very good condition, with light, even age toning consistent with early 20th-century chromolithographs. Colours remain strong and well preserved. Minor handling marks at the margins. Visible plate mark.
Framing tips:
Frame with a generous ivory mat and a dark walnut or ebonised frame to emphasize the deep blue ground and pierced rim. A slightly wider lower mat margin will echo the sculptural weight of the dish.
