About the Item

Falco Leucocephalus Hornotinus – The Young Bald Eagle, by Sepp Nozeman, 1770s This magnificent hand-colored engraving of Falco Leucocephalus Hornotinus (the young Bald Eagle) was created by Jan Christiaan Sepp and Cornelius Nozeman for their landmark natural history work Nederlandsche Vogelen (Birds of the Netherlands), published in Amsterdam between 1770 and 1829. It remains one of the most celebrated ornithological publications of the 18th century, admired for its scientific precision and superb artistry. The plate presents a youthful Bald Eagle perched regally on a gnarled branch, its sharp talons and powerful beak rendered with exquisite detail. The subtle gradation of browns, creams, and golden tones in the plumage reflects the extraordinary craftsmanship of Sepp’s workshop, which combined copperplate engraving with meticulous hand-coloring. Each plate from *Nederlandsche Vogelen* was engraved, printed, and colored by hand under the direction of the Sepp family, making every example a work of art in its own right. Though the Bald Eagle is most famously associated with North America, its depiction in this Dutch series illustrates the encyclopedic scope and ambition of Nozeman’s project—to document and illustrate all bird species known to occur in the Netherlands and adjacent regions. The inclusion of foreign or migratory species demonstrates the 18th-century fascination with global natural history and exploration. Collectors value this print for both its beauty and its importance in the history of ornithological illustration. The combination of scientific accuracy and aesthetic refinement reflects the Enlightenment ideal of merging art and knowledge. Condition: Very good to almost excellent for its age, with only faint toning and minimal handling marks. The impression is rich, the paper strong, and the colors vivid and fresh. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: Ideally presented in a gold or dark walnut frame with an ivory mat to enhance the natural hues of the plumage and the fine engraving lines. Technique: Hand-colored copperplate engraving Maker: Jan Christiaan Sepp Cornelius Nozeman, Amsterdam, 1770s

"Washington Sea Eagle": An Original Audubon Hand-colored Lithograph
By After John James Audubon
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original John James Audubon hand-colored royal octavo lithograph entitled "Washington Sea Eagle", No. 3, Plate 13, from Audubon's "Birds of America". It was lithographed, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen and published in Philadelphia between 1856-1871. It depicts an adult male sea eagle perched on a rock. This is an excerpt from Audubon's own description of this magnificent eagle, which includes how he came up with the name "Washington Sea Eagle": "The name which I have chosen for this new species of Eagle, “The Bird of Washington,” may, by some, be considered as preposterous and unfit; but as it is indisputably the noblest bird of its genus that has yet been discovered in the United States, I trust I shall be allowed to honour it with the name of one yet nobler, who was the saviour of his country, and whose name will ever be dear, to it. To those who may be curious to know my reasons, I can only say, that, as the new world gave me birth and liberty, the great man who ensured its independence is next to my heart. He had a nobility of mind, and a generosity of soul, such as are seldom possessed. He was brave, so is the Eagle; like it, too, he was the terror of his foes; and his fame, extending from pole to pole, resembles the majestic soarings of the mightiest of the feathered tribe...
