About the Item
A rare and expressive wall-mounted cabinet crafted by an unknown studio artisan, likely in the Pacific Northwest, and dating from the mid-20th century. This one-of-a-kind piece masterfully blends functional furniture design with bold folk art sensibility, featuring a strong influence from Northwest Coast Indigenous visual traditions.
The structure is built from solid stained wood with an architectural silhouette — sweeping eaves, curved support brackets, and a pagoda-like form give the piece a sculptural presence. The door panel is the focal point, showcasing a deeply carved and vibrantly painted totemic face in red, yellow, turquoise, and black, echoing the formline styles found in Tlingit and Haida artwork. Complementary roundels on the lower legs further reinforce the visual language.
Inside, the cabinet offers storage and display space, while the open upper shelf enhances its practical and aesthetic appeal. Though unsigned, the workmanship and wear suggest a skilled hand, likely part of the folk revival or studio craft movement of the 1950s–70s.
