A striking large-scale hand-woven fiber artwork by San Diego textile artist Kathy Merten, executed in 1984 and retaining its original signed label on the reverse. Crafted in richly saturated tones of crimson, burgundy, and magenta against sculptural fields of natural wool, the composition combines organic abstraction with refined textural minimalism, making it visually impactful while remaining harmonious and architectural.
The work exemplifies the late-20th-century American studio craft movement, aligning aesthetically with the textile explorations of Sheila Hicks, Olga de Amaral, and Lenore Tawney. The controlled horizontal chromatic banding contrasts beautifully with the free-form negative space, creating a balance between structure and spontaneity, as well as color and silence.
