About the Item

The game of bowls would have been created in Gaul. Balls were first made of clay, stone, then wood and finally steel, but, after the “bouleurs” of the Middle Ages, the golden age of balls of all kinds was certainly the Renaissance when the nobility takes over the game in the same way as cup and ball and tennis (which will become tennis). For obscure reasons, the game was forbidden to the people in 1629, a ban that was not followed and quickly lifted. In the 18th century the game remained very popular, to the point that Diderot and D'Alembert's Encyclopédie mentions it. The French Revolution by abolishing the privileges of the nobility again legalized the practice of gambling for all.
