The composition is framed by a richly painted border of flowers and fruits, evoking the decorative flourish of Flemish tapestries, and is set within a substantial walnut surround that both protects and enhances the work. The scale of the piece, nearly eight feet wide, underscores its dramatic presence, originally intended for a grand interior. David Teniers the Younger was one of the most versatile artists of the Flemish Baroque, celebrated for his prolific output in history painting, landscape, portraiture, and still life.
