A late 19th-century French tapestry, hand-woven in wool and later backed in cotton for preservation. Rendered in a restrained palette of sepia and umber, the limited coloration only amplifies the depth and nuance of its composition. At its heart, three loyal hunting dogs rest beneath a vaulted canopy of chestnut leaves—still, yet watchful, their expressions tender with quiet alertness. The background dissolves into shadow, drawing focus to the animals’ dignified poise and the lush foliage that envelops them. An ornate border of curling acanthus, ripe fruit, and scrollwork frames the tableau like a living reliquary—florid but controlled, baroque in spirit. Woven not just as decoration but as narrative, the piece carries a melancholy grace: a still from a pastoral past, full of silence and story. Unusually narrow in proportion—just 48 inches wide—this textile is far more placeable than the sweeping château panels it echoes.
