About the Item
This pair of rare 19th century large verdure tapestries, woven in the celebrated Aubusson workshops, illustrates the enduring appeal of nature-inspired decoration in French interiors. Executed in wool with soft, harmonious tones of green, ochre, rose, and pale blue, the two panels present complementary yet distinct compositions, designed to be displayed together as a decorative ensemble.
One panel features a majestic heron standing gracefully by the edge of a stream, surrounded by abundant foliage, flowering plants, and with a charming country house visible in the background.
The other panel depicts a duck captured in full flight above a richly detailed landscape, framed by large trees and dense vegetation. Both subjects reflect the 19th century revival of verdure weaving, inspired by the great pastoral themes of the 17th and 18th centuries but executed with the characteristic palette and technique of the period.
The tall, narrow format of these tapestries suggests they were originally conceived as wall hangings to adorn architectural spaces such as alcoves, panels, or doorways, bringing a touch of natural serenity into elegant bourgeois interiors.
Though softened with age, the artistry remains striking, with subtle shading, fine detailing, and a poetic sense of balance. Today, these panels are highly desirable not only for collectors but also for interior designers seeking decorative works with timeless French character.
