About the Item

Tapestries were ubiquitous in the castles and churches of the late medieval and Renaissance eras. At a practical level, they provided a form of insulation and decoration that could be easily transported. In addition, the process of tapestry weaving, where every stitch is placed by hand, enabled the creation of complex figurative images on an enormous scale. This 16th Century Baroque Brussels Mythological Tapestry with angel measures 9.1 x 6.5 ft. The colors and figures are exquisite as are the floral details on the border. Kindly note that the figure in the foreground was restored before we acquired the piece. Provenance: Christie's Auction House, New York, NY in 1993
