About the Item
Royal House Antiques
Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this rather stunning, 1831 dated needlework sampler made in the reign of King William IV
I have various other samplers listed for the sale, the earliest dates to 1727 and depicts the 10 commandments
This really is a piece of history, pure folk art, its super decorative and highly collectable, made by Mary Ann Thomas and completed in 1835
The piece reads a poem which has a bit of hamlet about it, it reads as follows
"The season of youth is in every respect peculiarly important, it is the period in which the foundation of every useful excellence, must be laid, the natural, and the mental powers are, then fitted, for the acquirement of knowledge, and the docility of temper usually attendant on the early hours of life, render that time peculiarly favorable, to every good imprefsion. Every opportunity now lost to improvement is an irreparable disadvantage to each succeeding period. The time which elapses to day in negligence or folly, no future wishes can recall, since no industry can renew, those moments which you have once suffered to escape. Think therefore with awful veneration on the present period, of your existence and may it be yours to make the best determination that you will Remember your Creator in the days of your youth."
The condition is as you can see in the pictures, its 194 years old this year so the fact this it still exists is a miracle, it is lightly distressed but very well preserved
