Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this old faded and frayed Antique Circa 1880 Tapestry depicting Watteau-Esque figures after Antoine Watteau
A very good looking well made and quite large wall hanging tapestry, this is circa 1880 as mentioned, heavily faded, worn and well used over the last century, it is a very fine piece and looks super authentic in any setting
I have one other of these which will be listed shortly, its the same but comes with a pine back frame
"Watteau-esque figures" refers to figures in paintings or other artworks that are inspired by the style and themes of Jean-Antoine Watteau, particularly his invention of the fête galante genre. These works feature elegant aristocrats in leisurely settings, often in a stage-like atmosphere, and incorporate motifs from the Commedia dell'arte, like Harlequin and Pierrot. The widespread popularity of these figures, in styles like rococo painting and porcelain decoration, stems from their reproduction as etchings and prints, notably by Jean de Jullienne.
