Large wool wall tapestry, attributed to the Aubusson Manufactory, depicting an elegant gallant pastoral scene set in an idealized rural landscape.
The composition features young shepherds and shepherdesses, richly dressed, gathered around a donkey laden with baskets, accompanied by a flock of sheep and a dog in motion. The figures exchange affectionate glances and gestures, conveying an atmosphere of gentleness and conviviality characteristic of 18th-century pastoral scenes.
On the left, a rustic house partially covered with vegetation is set within a lush wooded environment, while in the background a rolling landscape opens up with distant architecture, adding depth and perspective to the whole. The color palette, dominated by warm and delicate tones (ochres, soft greens, pinkish beiges), gives the work great visual harmony.
This tapestry perfectly illustrates the aristocratic taste for an idealized vision of rural life, inspired by French Rococo painters such as Watteau or Boucher, and highly prized in grand interior decorations.
