Louis Toffoli was a French painter and lithographer born in Trieste (then on the Austrian coast) on October 16, 1907, to an Italian father and a Slovenian mother, and died on February 18, 1999, in Créteil, France. Having successively held Austro-Hungarian, Italian, and French citizenship, Toffoli declared himself "from Trieste" and signed his paintings neither Luigi nor Louis, but simply Toffoli.
This magnificent tapestry has undergone a thorough cleaning by our experts in our workshop. It is now ready to adorn your home.
Artist and Manufacturer:
Artist's Cartoon: Louis Toffoli (1907-1999), a French painter and lithographer renowned for his transparencies and travel themes.
Manufacturer: Robert Four in Aubusson, a celebrated workshop perpetuating the tradition of modern French tapestry.
Title: On the Nie (or On the Nie).
Dimensions: 137 cm (Length) x 90 cm (Height)
Subject and Composition:
The tapestry depicts a nautical scene with sailboats, rendered using Toffoli's characteristic technique of layering and transparency.
The Water and the Horizon: Water occupies most of the lower surface, reflecting the colors of the sky. It is rendered in horizontal bands of ochre yellow, orange-brown, and blue. The horizon in the center is a bright, vibrant yellow, from which rays of light seem to emanate.
The Sailboats:
On the right: Two triangular sails dominate, a deep, transparent cobalt blue. The layering of the sails creates an effect of depth and color density. The hull is dark, terracotta and black.
On the left: A more discreet sailboat, its sail a gray-beige or light brown, reflected in the water.
Sky and Light: The background is luminous. Stylized cloud forms in mauve, violet, and pale blue surround powerful rays of sunlight (or dawn) in a very light yellow, radiating downwards from the top and center of the composition.
Style and Technique:
Aesthetics: The work is characteristic of modern textile art, with a figurative yet highly stylized and geometric style, in the spirit of Post-Cubism.
Panel: The color palette is bold, primarily focused on contrasts between cool blues (water, sky) and warm yellows (light, horizon), enriched by touches of mauve and ochre.
Weaving: The Aubusson wool weave highlights the flat areas of color, hatching, and subtle gradations, transforming the artist's brushstrokes into textile material.
Signatures:
The signatures are visible in the weave at the bottom of the artwork:
The name of the manufacturer: R. Four (Robert Four) is visible in the lower left corner.
The artist's signature: Toffoli is located in the lower right corner.
