About the Item
'Sunbirds
Tropical Flowers 2.0' is a Jacquard woven tapestry by contemporary fiber artist Tjitske Storm. The colorful bursting composition is composed of more than 200 elements of images of tropical flowers and sunbirds. The digital images are cut-out, re-colored, adjusted and merged into a complex multi-layered digital artwork before translated to highly detailed Jacquard woven fabric. Various weaving techniques are implemented while keeping in mind the Jacquard weaving method built up from eight colors only. The yarns are made from Pure New Wool, (Mercerized) Cotton and NewLife® Polyester and the Jacquard weaving is done within a sustainable textile production.
Limited edition of 8 plus 1 A.P.
The work is part of the series 'The Art of Living Together', inspired by the natural phenomenon of symbiosis* within evolution, which is a fascinating intermingling between different species in their development. The interaction amidst these seemingly opposite forces is emphasized through the correlation of the geometric and the organic, the abstract and the detailed, the digital and the tactile, the East and the West, the North and the South, and the old and the new. When the fragile reciprocity is precisely balanced, these dissimilar worlds smoothly collide, merge and enforce each other.
*Symbiosis
Most tropical flowers are uniquely beautiful with vibrant colours and long tubular calyx full of sugary nectar. However, they are also extremely vulnerable. Sunbirds feed on all the insects that visit these plants, and this helps in protecting the fragile flowers from being eaten or damaged by parasites. In return, the flowers have customized and adjusted their shape and size for the beaks of local sunbirds, to be exclusively available for them: mutualistic symbiosis.

"My expressive style reflects a dynamic synergy of opposite worlds, visible through the combination of precisely aligned geometry and fluid organic shapes, detailed photographic assemblages and abstract illustrations, and the implementation of digital techniques and ancient fiber crafts. Through exploring, interchanging and harmonizing contradictions and perspectives, both conceptually and visually, I aim to underline the fragile equilibrium between the unity and the diversity of life."

Tjitske Storm
Tjitske Storm’s expressive style reflects a dynamic synergy of opposite worlds, blending precisely aligned geometry with fluid organic shapes and digital techniques with ancient fiber crafts. Driven by a neurodivergent perspective and a fascination with the interconnection between biodiversity and humanity, Storm aspires to "Rewild the World." Her artworks function as inner landscapes where patterns, systems, and sensory details merge to capture emotion and distill the abundance of life into visual clarity.
A graduate of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, Storm honed her skills in surface design at the prestigious Marcel Wanders Studio before shifting her focus to fine art. Her debut series, The Art of Living Together (2022), was presented at Rossana Orlandi in Milan, followed by two years of representation by Todd Merrill Studio in New York. Currently moving toward new techniques beyond her woven and tufted works, she continues to create thought-provoking pieces that inspire connection and storytelling.
