About the Item

Beautiful and extraordinarily rare 5400early 20th Century hand embroidered panel, commissioned to a Japanese artisan for a European sailor to document his travels in the navy. The panel depicts flags from all of the countries his vessel passed through, with a pictorial view an eagle and dragon fighting in between. The lower register shows the vessel he was a crew member aboard of. German inscriptions adorn the panel, dated 1930-1931. Panel is in fair condition. Wear is consistent with age. Silk panel is tattered and worn, with tears and discoloration. Expect wear consistent with age like tears, sagging, discoloration, staining, taped repairs, mold, etc. Reframed in a 19th Century Walnut frame and mounted with acid-free foam core backing board.
