About the Item
An elegant fabric Tapestry depicting Grecco mythological themes. Titled “L’Aigle et Junon d’après Lagrénée” and is a tapestry recreation of a painting by Jean-Jacques Lagrenée le Jeune. Louis XVI revival weaving typical of the Aubusson manufactory. A distinctive egg and dart line pattern on the outer border combined with floral and rococo cartouches at top and bottom is extremely characteristic of Aubusson tapestries made between roughly 1875 and 1910. The top includes a shell with a floral motif, frames the bottom with a similar pattern on top with a woman’s face at the top with a knotted necklace. The central portion of the tapestry has an eagle in the foreground on a branch with dense foliage confronting what looks like a spirit of the Greek god Zeus sitting on a throne. This piece tells a subtle but fascinating story. Soft, pastel, “shaded” dyeing (the famous dégradé Aubusson technique) and very high weave density (approximately 7–8 warps per cm) place it firmly in the high-end 19th-century Aubusson production. The loops are stitched at the top to make space for a drapery rod to hang the piece. Created circa 19th century in France.
No obvious markings present on the piece.
In good condition. The front is in especially good condition, with the back fully lined.
This beautiful tapestry would be a brilliant focal point for any style of room. Ready to install on a drapery rod.
