Artist: After the Abduction of Helen by Paris Period: Late 19th Century Condition: Excellent Material: Wool Width: 173 cm Height: 240 cm Depth: 0.5 cm Helen was the daughter of Zeus and Leda, and was considered the most beautiful woman in the world. She was married to King Menelaus of Sparta. Paris, Prince of Troy, was the son of Priam and Hecuba, King and Queen of Troy. The Origin of the Incident The myth recounts that during a beauty contest between the goddesses—Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite—Zeus chose Paris as the judge. Each goddess promised him a gift: Hera: power and wealth Athena: wisdom and military victory Aphrodite: the love of the most beautiful woman in the world Paris chose Aphrodite, who promised him Helen. Thus began the tragic fate of Troy. The Abduction According to most versions: Paris traveled to Greece, to Sparta, under the pretext of a diplomatic or trade visit. Helen, captivated by his beauty and charmed by Aphrodite, left Menelaus willingly or was abducted by Paris, according to some versions. Paris took Helen to Troy, which was considered an act of treason and a major affront to the Greeks. Consequences Menelaus, humiliated and furious, summons the Greek kings to unite to avenge his honor and reclaim Helen. This leads directly to the Trojan War, which lasts ten years and is the subject of Homer's Iliad.
