About the Item
This rug is a one of a kind heirloom piece. Taking inspiration from brutalism, Scandinavian minimalism, and Mexican traditions to create a one of a kind piece that will stand out in any space.
Andrew Boos seeks to redefine what a rug is. His work is not meant to be the static anchor of a room, rather it is a new architectural element. As usable art, his rugs encourage the flow of movement through a space. They redirect the focus from 2d static wall decorations to an element that creates an immersive environment. His rugs become a focal point, and invite you to enter and experience the space in a way that traditional rugs cannot.
The entire process of creating this rug was done in the artist's Brooklyn studio. Each work produced by the artist is a bespoke heirloom piece. The rug is woven with traditional Kilim techniques, using interlocking yarn to add strength and stability and is strong enough to withstand daily traffic. As a handmade rug, the work exhibits variations and imperfections, representing the true nature of the materials and techniques.
The back of the rug has been finished so the piece may be reversed, with the pattern facing any direction.
The red in this rug was dyed from cochineal, a small insect that has been cultivated since the time of the Mayans and Incas, and prized throughout the world as the strongest source of natural red dye.
Note: The color tones and hues will vary depending on whether your space is lit with fluorescent, incandescent or natural light. These photos were taken in bright, studio lighting and try to emulate what the rug will look like in bright indirect sunlight.
Measures: Approximate 58" x 94.5" with 4" cotton tassels on each end.

Andrew Boos
Andrew Boos is an artist and bespoke rug designer based in Brooklyn, NY. His work is inspired by the physics of light and space, exploring those interactions through the use of line, shape and color. He hand dyes his yarn to achieve subtle variations in tone. This allows for a much freer use of color, more akin to paintings than traditional textiles.
The designs are composed on the loom and handwoven by the artist using traditional kilim and tapestry techniques. Starting from a central theme involving the interaction of shape and color, elements are added or subtracted as the piece progresses, allowing for spontaneity and freedom throughout the weaving process. Each piece is one of a kind.

Each color included in this rug was hand-dyed by the artist using natural dyes to achieve the subtle variety in tones. The greys were created using logwood, tannin and iron.
