About the Item
'Welwitschia' is a hand-tufted tapestry by contemporary fiber artist Tjitske Storm. The tapestry is digitally designed by Tjitske and handmade by artisans in India with the utmost care. New Zealand Wool of the highest quality is used to create the durable and soft results, and yarns are colored with natural chemical-free ingredients. Some sparks are added through implementing metal chains within the hanging threads.
The work is part of the series 'The Art of Living Together', inspired by the natural phenomenon of symbiosis* within evolution, which is a fascinating intermingling between different species in their development. The interaction amidst these seemingly opposite forces is emphasized through the correlation of the geometric and the organic, the abstract and the detailed, the digital and the tactile, the East and the West, the North and the South, and the old and the new. When the fragile reciprocity is precisely balanced, these dissimilar worlds smoothly collide, merge and enforce each other.
*Symbiosis
The Welwitschia Mirabilis and the Welwitschia Bug are living together in the African desert, balancing amidst the delicate interplay of entanglement and autonomy. A vulnerable dance that continues to proof its relevance for evolution. The bugs are often found in pairs, shuffling side-to-side in a dynamic of push-and-pull attraction, while the plants supply protection from the harsh sunlight. The Welwitschia sap is important food for the bugs, and in return these creatures help the flowers survive through pollination of the seeds. However, the bugs can also spread a fungus that can be harmful to the development of healthy seeds. It is an ambivalent relationship, with the risk of becoming a depleting symbiotic entanglement.

"My expressive style reflects a dynamic synergy of opposite worlds, visible through the combination of precisely aligned geometry and fluid organic shapes, detailed photographic assemblages and abstract illustrations, and the implementation of digital techniques and ancient fiber crafts. Through exploring, interchanging and harmonizing contradictions and perspectives, both conceptually and visually, I aim to underline the fragile equilibrium between the unity and the diversity of life."

Tjitske Storm
Tjitske Storm’s expressive style reflects a dynamic synergy of opposite worlds, blending precisely aligned geometry with fluid organic shapes and digital techniques with ancient fiber crafts. Driven by a neurodivergent perspective and a fascination with the interconnection between biodiversity and humanity, Storm aspires to "Rewild the World." Her artworks function as inner landscapes where patterns, systems, and sensory details merge to capture emotion and distill the abundance of life into visual clarity.
A graduate of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, Storm honed her skills in surface design at the prestigious Marcel Wanders Studio before shifting her focus to fine art. Her debut series, The Art of Living Together (2022), was presented at Rossana Orlandi in Milan, followed by two years of representation by Todd Merrill Studio in New York. Currently moving toward new techniques beyond her woven and tufted works, she continues to create thought-provoking pieces that inspire connection and storytelling.
