About the Item

Handmade Fine Silk Embroidered Tapestry after Gustave Doré, The Flagellation of Christ The only one in the world reproduction made in hand made silk embroidery. Re-edition. Original tapestry is in a private collection Frame could be made upon the client inquiry The Scene: Jesus is tied to a central column, a traditional artistic element often referred to as the "Scourging at the Pillar". He is surrounded by Roman soldiers who strike him with whips (scourges). The Intent: In the narrative, the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate ordered the scourging (a fustigatio, or lighter form of punishment) in a failed attempt to satisfy the angry crowd and avoid a death sentence. Dore's Interpretation: Unlike earlier Renaissance works that often focused on anatomical perfection, Doré’s version emphasizes drama and isolation. He uses stark lighting to contrast Jesus’ pale, suffering body against the dark, aggressive forms of his tormentors.

17th century Christ in chains Oil on canvas, 95 x 71 cm Frame 110 x 84 cm The figurative tradition representing Christ with chained hands can be traced back to the early Middle Ages, when an iconography of His pains spread widely. The need to translate the Passion into images aimed to raise awareness of the forgiveness that has occurred for all men, consequent to the Crucifixion. This painting depicts the moment before the audience before Pilate. Christ has not yet been cruelly mocked by the soldiers, despite the fact that he is already wearing the crown of thorns and the purple...
