Japanese Antique Paper Wabi-Sabi Washi

About the Item

This rare shichou-maku (paper-hung curtain) was crafted during Japan’s Meiji period (late 19th to early 20th century). It was originally used in sericulture rooms—spaces dedicated to raising silkworms—to maintain warmth and protect the delicate creatures from cold drafts and external disturbances. The curtain would be hung from ceiling to floor, functioning much like a mosquito net to enclose and insulate the room. The material is made from recycled Washi (traditional Japanese paper), dating back to the Edo and early Meiji periods. Some of the layered paper has been confirmed to originate as far back as the mid-1700s, giving the piece both historical depth and cultural significance. These recycled papers were layered and patched over time, allowing the curtain to be used for many decades. While originally designed to be suspended, the piece may also have been used as a floor mat for various tasks. To reinforce the surface and repel insects, multiple layers of kakishibu a natural tannin made from fermented persimmon juice were applied. As the surface faded with use, more layers of kakishibu were reapplied, creating a richly textured and weathered patina. This process resulted in a beautifully faded and complex surface, with subtle tonal shifts and deep natural expression. Its visual impact is strong and abstract, resembling a contemporary artwork while remaining deeply rooted in tradition and function. It is truly a one-of-a-kind piece that blends utility, history, and aesthetic expression. In a modern setting, this piece is highly recommended for use as a floor rug or hung on the wall as an art installation. It can also be used as a simple room divider, evoking the Japanese wabisabi philosophy of embracing imperfection, impermanence, and the passage of time.
