About the Item

This large, vintage Japanese paper tapestry was created in Japan between the Meiji and Taisho periods (late 19th and early 20th centuries). It's believed to have originally been used as a floor covering, but its exact purpose in daily life at the time remains unknown. However, in Japan, where paper was a scarce resource, the practice of pasting together and reusing old paper rather than discarding it was widespread, and this piece is deeply imbued with that culture. This large piece was painstakingly pieced together from multiple pieces of old Japanese paper, and its surface is densely covered in brushstrokes. The lines of text, a mixture of cursive and semi-cursive writing, no longer read as information but instead evoke a visually captivating abstract rhythm and pattern. The natural color characteristic of Japanese paper, combined with the fading of ageing, elevates the piece to a depth reminiscent of contemporary art. This piece is in excellent condition, with few major tears and minimal staining, unusual for this type of vintage paper. The shadows created by the creases and pasted edges are beautiful traces of handwork, and have a depth that only something that has aged over time can have. A particularly distinctive feature of this piece is that it has been processed so that it can be rolled up onto a bamboo pole. While similar recycled paper is often found without its bamboo stalk, this piece has already been prepared for wall hanging, making it suitable for display in modern spaces. It looks very impressive when hung on the wall, and its neutral yet rich color palette blends well with minimalist spaces, traditional Japanese furnishings, and international interiors. The different colors of the washi paper and the shading of the calligraphy on the front and back create a completely different impression depending on which side is displayed, offering a uniquely enjoyable experience. Due to the unique tendency of recycled paper, the edges may curl. However, they can be displayed without any problems by securing them with thin pins or nails. The layers of calligraphy remaining from joining large pieces of washi paper, the patina of time, and the bamboo stalk create a sense of presence.
