About the Item
Mid-Century tapestry designed by Mario Prassinos (1916-1985) and woven at Atelier Suzanne Goubely-Gatien in Aubusson, France. Hand woven in wool, it dates to 1965 and entitled "Troilus et Cressida". The artist's name and monogram for the atelier are woven in the lower right corner.
Mario Prassinos is a lyrical artist who uses tapestry as a means of expressing his own experience of nature and life. His aim is to create an image of his feelings without reproducing the objects which have aroused those feelings. To achieve this purpose he turns to abstraction in a very personal style where sinuous shapes entwine in contrasting colors, often following a scheme of red, brown and beige with a few luminous highlights of yellow, and dramatically opposed blacks and whites.
Prassinos designed several theater sets and for him the link between tapestry and the theater was self evident, "A large scale tapestry is reminiscent of the theatre...It is solemn and has a story to tell. The fact that some of my large tapestries are named after Shakespearean tragedies is not an accident."
