About the Item

This exquisite Rölakan tapestry hails from the Skåne region of Sweden, dating back to the 1800s. It features stylized plant motifs in hues of white, ochre, black, burgundy, green, and petrol blue, complemented by dark blue and brown tones. Crafted from plant-dyed wool, this tapestry showcases a vibrant and traditional color palette. The röllakan tapestry is hand-woven using wool yarn on linen warp. For easy wall display, it includes three loops sewn onto the back. It serves not just as a textile, but as a piece of art. Looks good on the wall as it is, or could be mounted behind glass in a frame. The measurement 73 cm is without the fringes. The height of the tapestry including the fringes is 94 cm. ABOUT RÖLLAKAN RUGS Röllakan rugs take their name from the traditional Swedish weaving technique, featuring a flatweave design made on a treadle loom using cotton or linen warp and 100% wool yarn. The name originates from the old swedish word "ryglakan," meaning "back sheet," as these richly patterned fabrics were once hung behind seating for insulation. Handwoven, röllakan rugs are durable, naturally dirt-resistant, and maintain their color and quality for years. This time-honored craft saw a revival in the early 20th century, producing rugs with vibrant geometric designs.
