About the Item
This tapestry is made with the technique called "grass juice." Its dimensions are 243 cm. x 140 cm. Made in the early 1900s, it depicts a madonna with child.
The figure of the Madonna occupies almost the entire height of the tapestry, soaring and wrapped in flowing draperies. The baby is resting on the mother's chest, creating a harmonious vertical composition.
The colors with delicate and soft tones, typical of the grass-juice technique. The blue of the mantle and the red of the robe emerge elegantly.
The background is ethereal, with shades ranging from beige to light blue, evoking a celestial and spiritual atmosphere. The overall effect is similar to that of a watercolor painting.
It is enclosed in an ornate border with scroll and leaf motifs.
Monogrammed at bottom.
HERB JUICE
AN ANCIENT PAINTING TECHNIQUE THAT "IMPRINTS" NATURE ONTO FABRIC. The pictorial effect that is achieved with this technique lies in the delicacy of watercolor, but the rendering of colors has its own brilliance. In Europe, too, this technique was widely used in the 1600s and 1700s to paint fabric tapestries, using vegetable colors spread 'imbibendo,' that is, impregnating canvases without the need for preparation.
