About the Item
Three fine rare examples of “tent stitch” panels, made with colored silks and some metallic threads, from a group of thirteen panels and fragments of English or Scottish origin, most likely dating to circa 1570. The panels depict a variety of themes, including a burning tree trunk, white petaled flowers, and a catapult, each with a red border and grapevine accent border with Latin anagrams. Tent stitch, also known as petit point, is a diagonal needlepoint stitch where the thread is worked over one intersection of the canvas or fabric. These type of stitched panels were particularly popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. The most famous of these type panels is a set called the “Oxburgh Hangings” by Mary Stuart, worked while she was a prisoner in England. Elizabeth I had her live under Elizabeth of Shrewsburg’s (later Bess of Hardwick) protection, since they both enjoyed making embroideries.
The top and bottom panels have not been researched in detail, but the center panel has white flower petals, overlaid with metallic triangles (meaning the Trinity). Within the triangles, there are metallic circles surrounded by blue and white petals. A circle universally means eternity or never ending. The clouds represent a veil covering the unseen God. A rope with tassels entwines the whole. In the borders are stitched the Latin words “Amer-Contraxit-Marguerite-Ambas”, with a loose translation “My love for Marguerite has drawn us together like a rope”. There was a Marguerite Valois, who was the sister of Francis II, Mary’s first beloved. Francis, Mary, Marguerite, and Elizabeth (another sister of Francis) grew up together in France and were devoted friends. Mary longed for her sister to return to Scotland. This does not mean with a certainty that this panel was created by Mary Stuart, but makes it an interesting possibility.
The panels are in fair to good condition, with some losses and fading, and have a later backing of netting. Professionally mounted under plexiglass in a molded giltwood frame. Dimensions (three panels together): 42 in H x 13 in W, sight; 46.25 in H x 17.25 in W x 1.5 in D. Ref: 13380
