About the Item

This rare and important midcentury tapestry was designed by Jean Lurçat (1892–1966), the pivotal figure in the revival of modern tapestry in the 20th century. It was handwoven in wool at the respected Atelier P. Legoueix in Aubusson, France, circa 1950, after Jean Lurçat’s original Carton No. 13048. Woven using traditional Aubusson techniques, the tapestry translates Lurçat’s bold modernist composition into a richly textured wool surface, characterized by strong graphic forms, rhythmic structure, and symbolic imagery—hallmarks of his mature style. The quality of execution reflects the high standards of the Legoueix workshop, known for producing important editions of Lurçat’s designs. The reverse is marked “Carte A” and hand-signed by Jean Lurçat, providing authoritative confirmation of authorship and authenticity. Signed examples from this period are increasingly scarce and are considered highly desirable by collectors and institutions. Designer: Jean Lurçat (1892–1966) After Carton: No. 13048 Atelier: P.
