About the Item

Fabulous, large cast pair of brass Shou character curtain tie backs. These install easily once the front character element has been unscrewed from the back panel, then screw the character element back on for a wonderfully deep curtain tie back that makes a bold statement. The world of admiration and adoration for design that comes from and reflects the eastern world are known as Chinoiserie. Chinoiserie emerged in the 17th century, characterized by the fanciful imitation of Chinese and East Asian art, designs, and aesthetics. It draws inspiration from elements like porcelain, lacquer, silk, bamboo, pagodas, and mythical creatures, which were incorporated into furniture, wallpaper, and other decorative arts in a style tailored to European tastes. It was the mid 20th century when Chinoiserie had a phenomenal resurgence in the United States and these tie backs would have held silk panels, with the brass catching sunlight and refracting the symbol of longevity into the space. Shou, the Chinese symbol of longevity, is usually represented with a circle of the "Wu Fu," or five bats. These bats represent the five blessings of longevity: long life, good health, comfortable wealth, virtue, and peaceful death.
