About the Item

This rare and highly unusual Sitzendorf German porcelain wall bracket which would date from around 1870-1880 is styled as a monkey clasping a coconut with a palm tree style back plate. The coconut forms a pocket for storage or dispaly. The monkey is in a glazed white bisque porcelain while the remainder of the piece in naturalistically glazed in bronws and green. The monkey's face is full of mischief and personality. During these years of the 19th century Sitzendorf where generally producing Meissen style wares and their figural groups were often more Romantic in style and this is a clear departure from their normal house style. The piece displays their early crossed batons mark in underglaze blue and has the impressed pattern number 239. This was the first mark that the Sitzendorf factory used before moving to a more complex crowned 'S' mark. This piece is in very good original condition with now evidence of any repairs, restoration, chips or cracks and will certainly be a talking point or highly effective decorative accent in the right spot.
