About the Item
A Pair of English Regency Black Lacquer and Gilt Wall Brackets with Hand-carved Lion Masks and Looped Rings.
Each bracket is structured with a flat, shaped shelf supported by a projecting carved support. The supports are executed in deep relief, showing lions’ heads rendered with detailed fur, wide eyes, and open mouths that grasp large looped rings. The lions’ faces are framed by carved scrolls and feathered elements highlighted in gilt, contrasting with the black lacquer finish across the surfaces. The carving quality is precise, with emphasis on the mane and features of the animals, and the gilt accents accentuate the layered structure.
The lions are carved with rounded snouts, protruding eyes, and tightly curled manes that descend along the sides of each bracket. Their mouths are pierced to secure the looped rings, which are large and proportionate to the heads. The paws are shown beneath the rings, gripping the circular forms, further reinforcing the sculptural presentation of the animals. Beneath, acanthus leaves extend downward, terminating in small scrolls that continue the carved ornamentation.
The reverse of each bracket is flat and fitted with iron and brass hardware for wall mounting. The construction is in wood, fully painted with black lacquer and decorated with gilt leaf motifs to highlight the structural carvings. The size is larger than most wall brackets of this type, providing both functional support and prominent decorative presence.
