This sculptural pair of palmette-form wall brackets exemplifies the highly expressive decorative language associated with the work of Serge Roche, one of the most imaginative figures in mid-century French design. Executed in molded and polychromed composition with a softly lacquered surface, these brackets blur the boundary between architectural ornament and autonomous sculpture.
Each bracket is conceived as a dramatic, triangular palmette composed of deeply modeled, flame-like foliate elements that radiate outward and downward in rhythmic succession. The carving is intentionally exaggerated, with sharply curling leaf tips, undercut voids, and sinuous contours that create a strong play of light and shadow. This sense of movement—at once vegetal, baroque, and modern—is central to Roche’s decorative vocabulary and reflects his fascination with organic form translated into architectural scale.
The surfaces are finished in warm ochre and muted gold tones, subtly highlighted with pale accents that emphasize the sculptural relief. The finish evokes aged gilt or sun-warmed plaster rather than literal metallic leaf, lending the pieces an atmospheric, painterly quality. From the front, the brackets read as abstract palmettes; from the side, their depth and curvature reveal their true three-dimensionality and structural intent.
Each example supports a shallow integrated display shelf, seamlessly incorporated into the upper structure.
